What: Honey is a saccharic secretion gathered and stored by honey bees, Apis mellifera. (EWG). It is widely used as a natural sweetener for food and drink, as well as an ingredient in cooking. Honey is also used as a treatment for sore throats, coughs, and may help reduce swelling, scarring, and speed wound healing.

Honey is used in cosmetics as a flavoring agent, humectant (to preserve the moisture content of skin), skin conditioning agent, emollient, moisturizer, for color and as an emollient. (EWG). The substance stimulates cytokine production which aids in healing and contains natural anti-bacterial properties. Honey is also said to be an effective acne treatment, as it does not strip the skin of natural oils like many conventional acne treatments.

Honey also appears to have strong antimicrobial properties, helping to prevent the growth of certain bacteria on the skin. This is partially due to its high sugar content which limits the amount of water available for the growth of bacteria.

Origin: Honey is derived from the nectar of flowers. (EWG).

Products Found In: Moisturizers, lip treatments, ointments, acne treatments, anti-aging treatments, facial masks.

Toxicity: Honey is generally classified as non-toxic or harmful. Honey can cause an allergic reaction in some. Should never be fed to an infant. (EWG).
